Acebrophylline is used in the treatment and prevention of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Acebrophylline is a mucolytic and bronchodilator. It works by relaxing the muscles of the airways and also thins and loosens mucus, making it easier to breathe. Terbutaline is a selective b2-receptor agonist that produces relaxation of smooth muscle found principally in bronchial, vascular and uterine tissues. Guaifenesin, a mucoactive drug, acts by loosening mucus in the airways and making coughs more productive. It is used for relief of wet cough and chest congestion due to the common cold, and remains the only legally marketed expectorant in the US (per OTC Monograph).
