Nitrofurantoin kills certain types of bacteria by blocking their ability to create proteins and other substances that they need to grow and reproduce. Nitrofurantoin may not be appropriate for all bladder infections, depending on which germs are causing the infection. Bacteria in some locations may have developed resistance to nitrofurantoin, which will make it less effective. Nitrofurantoin may also be used for other conditions as determined by your healthcare provider.
