Benzydamine is a topical anti-inflammatory drug that works by reducing the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines like tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-1β (IL-1β). It also has other effects, including -
Inhibiting neuronal excitability: Benzydamine reduces the firing frequency of neurons, increases rheobase, and increases afterhyperpolarization amplitude.
Stabilizing membranes: Benzydamine stabilizes lysosomes and inhibits the release of granules from neutrophils.
Preventing the release of inflammatory mediators: Benzydamine prevents the release of substance P and calcitonin gene related peptide from sensory nerve endings.
Antibacterial activity: Benzydamine has non-specific antibacterial activity against various bacterial strains
