Ambroxol is a mucolytic. It breaks down the acid mucopolysaccharide fibres which makes the sputum thinner and less viscous and therefore promotes mucus clearance. It also stimulates synthesis and release of surfactant by type II pneumocytes. Ambroxol is a mucolytic medicine used to treat respiratory diseases associated with excessive mucus secretion. It works by reducing the thickness of the mucus, making it easier to cough out.
