Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker that works by inhibiting the influx of calcium ions into vascular smooth muscle cells, leading to vasodilation (relaxation of blood vessels) and decreased peripheral vascular resistance, thereby reducing blood pressure. Atenolol is a beta-blocker that works by blocking the effects of adrenaline on beta-adrenergic receptors in the heart and blood vessels, resulting in decreased heart rate, reduced cardiac output, and lowered blood pressure.
