Azithromycin is an antibiotic. It works by preventing the synthesis of essential proteins required by bacteria to carry out vital functions. Thus, it stops the bacteria from growing and prevents the infection from spreading. Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that works by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit of bacteria, inhibiting protein synthesis, thereby stopping bacterial growth and preventing further spread of infection. This makes it bacteriostatic (stops bacterial growth) but can be bactericidal (kills bacteria) at higher concentrations.
