Chloramphenicol inhibits protein synthesis by reversibly binding to the peptidyl transferase cavity of the 50S subunit of the bacterial 70S ribosome. This prevents the aminoacyl-tRNA from binding to the ribosome| thus terminating polypeptide chain synthesis.
